Any ideas on how to get a 3 year old to brush her teeth or assist her in brushing her teeth? She has had some?

dental issues due to perscription antibiotics for an ear infection when she was a baby. I only let her have water after i brush her teeth, no candy, and i also try to substitute sugar free whenever possible, but my trouble is in brushing her teeth. She clenches them closed, refusing to allow me to brush anything but her front teeth. I have tried time outs for not cooperating and I have tried special incentives for good behavior, nothing seems to work.... Please anyone with ideas I would love to hear them. Thursday I have to spend close to 900.00 to repair molars, I can't afford much more so I need to try preventative maintenence, but how??????????????????????????

Any ideas on how to get a 3 year old to brush her teeth or assist her in brushing her teeth? She has had some?
Make it fun... bring her to the store and let her pick out her own tooth brush and paste. I agree that you should let her try brushing your teeth, but also let her brush her own. Why don't you make a habit of brushing them together? And sing a song while doing it, or play her fave song on a radio nearby. Brushing should last two minutes, which may seem like an eternity to her, the song will distract her. Or try "dress up", (but in a dental way) buy latex gloves and brush your teeth with them on, she may like to pretend she's a dentist. Kids LOVE those gloves. Most of all be creative and fun, she will like to play a brushing game. (and when you're all done, brag on what a big girl and good brusher she is, don't ever say anything negative even if she didn't do a good job.)
Reply:Let her help to brush yours, she sees mommy doing it, she may want to copy. Or have a family tooth brush time, bring everyone into the bathroom at the same time to brush teeth, it may get crowded, but again "monkey see, monkey do!"
Reply:Have you tried flavored toothpaste, like bubble gum aquafresh
Reply:Try getting her a fun tooth brush and tooth paste . I Don't know what they have for girls but for my son we got him a power ranger tooth brush and tooth paste and it worked like a charm . They have all kinds of neat thing out thier .Good Luck
Reply:Tell her, the dentist will wire her mouth open!
Reply:We give out and also use for our kids these little finger brushes. They fit snuggly on your, (the parents), pointer finger and have a tiny soft brush head. Since its on your finger you have the tactile sensation and you can tell that you are not hurting them I just gave out my last one today. You have to do it consistently twice a day. Eventually they will want to do it themselves. Then ya know its time to get them their own brush. You really need to brush your kids teeth for them from 9months to 6 yrs. old, Regaurdless of weather they try to brush their own teeth because they lack the dexterity. After 6 yrs they lack the motivation. Be sure to start them with Gel, not paste. Gel comes in flavors and kids like it more.
Reply:I AM A DENTAL ASSISTANT AND I SEE THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR FROM KIDS ALL THE TIME FOR SOME REASON KIDS ARE VERY APREHENSIVE. THE BEST ADVISE I WOULD GIVE TO YOU IS TO MAKE IT FUN FOR YOUR CHILD FROM THE VERY BEGINNING,EVEN IF YOUR CHILD IS BARELY STARTING TO GROW HIS FIRST TOOTH JUST HAND THEM A TOOTH BRUSH AND LET THEM BECOME FAMILAR WITH IT.FOR YOUR CHILD TO KNOW THAT ITS OKAY. WHENEVER YOU SEE YOUR CHILD GROWING IN MORE TEETH ASSIST THEM EVERY MORNING AND EVERY NIGHT IT ONLY TAKES FIVE MINUTES OF YOU TIME AND WILL SAVE YOU FROM A VERY GOOD DENTAL BILL IN THE FUTURE. MAKE SURE YOU NOT ONLY BRUSH THE TEETH BUT ALSO ON AND AROUND ON THE GUMS AND THEY ARE NEVER TO EARLY TO START FLOSSING THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT,CAVATIES CAN ALSO DECAY IN BETWEEN. SO JUST MAKE A PLUS FOR YOUR CHILD AND STRESS IT TO THEM THAT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.
Reply:2 things work with children that age....I have a 4 year old and its working with me. First I sit down while I brush my teeth and we do it together. She loves to copy me. We don't rush, we just sit together on my bed. The second is telling her that in order for her to be a big girl and keep her big girl teeth (that will be coming in soon) is to brush her teeth really well. Playing the "big girl" card always works for us!!!
Reply:Make brushing into a game. This also works with them picking up their toys. Just find fun and creative ways. Hope this helps.
Reply:Barney's gonna get ya!
