16 wks Pregnant and Brushing Teeth makes me heave & vomit; Anyone ever have this problem? Advice?

Hi there,

I am 16 weeks pregnant (4 mos). Since about the beginning of 3 mos along, I get sick whenever I brush my teeth. I know that with regular morning sickness, the woman gets sick every morning and it goes away by about 12 weeks. My sickness only comes on when I brush my teeth, and 4 mos later it still isn't going away... What is causing this? Anyone else ever had this problem?

My wife had this problem also. During pregnancy, the mother to be becomes extremely sensitive to anything that can harm the developing baby. We read that the fluoride they use in toothpaste is extremely poisonous (there's enough fluoride in a tube of infant toothpaste to kill a child), so we switched to a non-fluoride brand containing aloe vera that is available in health food stores.
Reply:Pregnancy is causing this. Its triggering your gag reflex. It'll pass, just go with the flow.
Reply:My wife had that same problem Doctor said that it was normal cant remember why but it will last all through your pregnancy probably. You just have to try to do what you can.
Reply:i use to have the same thing..only when i brushed in the morning...so i went and bought these mints that your suppose to use after you eat a meal and cant brush your teeth right away. And then i would brush them at night and i was fine
Reply:see your pharmacist and get a different toothpaste. a non peppermint one might help,
Reply:Yes, I went through this too. I brushed anyway. Now, thank goodness it has stopped and things are ok. I am now at 21 weeks and having heartburn now.
Reply:I had the same problem - hormones apparently gave me an overactive gag reflex. I didn't have any other form of morning sickness, though.

I did learn a trick though to help combat it - rubbing my temples for 30 seconds before brushing my teeth drastically cut down on the urge to gag. Why this works, I couldn't tell you; I just know that it worked wonders for me.
Reply:I had this problem when I was pregnant with my 5 year old daughter. I'm not sure what causes it but I used children's toothpaste that was bubblegum flavored just so I could brush my teeth. It doesn't feel like it cleans your teeth as well as regular toothpaste but it did the job for me without causing me to vomit.
Reply:Go get some of that teethbrushing gum at the drug store. It should pass with time but use the gum until it does.

I wish you all the best, peace, ruth
Reply:try smiling immediately after you have your gag reflex happen
Reply:I have this problem and I'm not even preggers!!! I could be the toothpaste your using or that your brushing too hard or too fast. My advice is to slow down, soften up, and change your toothpaste. I would also go see a doctor just to be safe.
Reply:The gag reflex is stronger during the first trimester. I don't know why. I had it too, but some women don't. A lot of people start brushing their teeth with a washcloth until it subsides. Just wet it and cover your finger with it and put toothpaste on it and rub your teeth. Use a tongue scraper if you need to.

Don't worry. It will go away.
Reply:reason unknown - my mom had this happen to her when she was preg. and through out th entire preg. nothing serious

just annoying - it must be just one of those things that happens to some women like some reason some pre. women crave ashes and lick ashtrays or smells becoming stronger

hope this helped - congrats on the baby - hope you go through a easy - painfree - beautiful labor
Reply:yes,i also had a problem smoking.about 13weeks into my pregnancy i had awful vomiting fits, that i had 2 give up the smoking then i found out i had miscarried.im sure the same wont happen 2 you.but if this problem is irratating you, go you're doctor for advice
Reply:I used to hate when I would have to brush my teeth because it would do that EXACT same thing to me. I would gag and almost throw up. I was about 6 months before my morning sickness went away.
Reply:my aunt had that problem when she was pregnant. i guess it's just a form of morning sickness...it should go away in a few weeks/months. maybe in the meantime try just rinsing with listerine or something?
