Teeth! When should i start brushing his teeth?

my baby is 11 months, and has 8 teeth, when should i start brushing them? he likes to copy me with his mini toothbrush when i brush mine, but i have not yet used any toothpaste, or brushed them on a regular basis, as i am worried he will just swallow it! I have bought the 'milk teeth' childrens toothpaste, perhaps it is specially made so it doesnt matter if it is swallowed? thanks!

Teeth! When should i start brushing his teeth?
Dentists say to start brushing them as soon as they appear, after all, they are there and subject to decay as they are subjected to food and milk. Be sure to be gentle as you brush them so he will enjoy the process and learn to do it properly. Our grandbabies brush theirs for a few minutes, then an adult finishes up, making sure to get every precious little tooth. Here's a link with more info.
Reply:You should start as soon as teeth start appearing, using only a small amount of toothpaste. This small amount will not matter if the baby does swallow some of it. It is difficult for a baby to spit out the toothpaste once finished, so it will probably be swallowed anyway.

It is important to train the baby to use the toothbrush so carry on letting him copy you - this is how a baby learns most things.
Reply:You should brush them twice a day the same as yours. Toothpaste won't do him any particular harm as its made to be swallowed. Use a very small amount and let him have a go himself too, the sooner you get him into the habit the better!
Reply:right now.
Reply:You should have been getting him used to brushing as soon as the first or second tooth came through

You can buy special baby toothpaste that is harmless to swallow.

you only need a pea sized amount
Reply:I started brushing my kids teeth twice a day as soon as they came through - you can never start too early!!! Use only a very small amount of toothpaste, childrens toothpaste is specially formulated so don't worry too much about him swallowing it!!!
Reply:My son only has one tooth and the doctor said to make sure I brush it with the infant tooth paste. The brand I have is orajel baby tooth paste, and it just takes the small drop.
Reply:I started as soon as my babies had teeth. We made it a game and they always had their teeth brushed after each meal. As they got older it became a habit for them to brush after each meal.
Reply:as soon as they appear!!
Reply:Hi,

you could have been brushing his gums with a soft rubber finger bush and infants non-flouride toothpaste...Now that he has teeth though, you should def. start bushing them with a soft toothbush, again usng the infants non-flouride toothpaste..use just a little bit ; he'll probably swallow it, but that's OK, For Now...
Reply:Start now. They make baby toothpaste thats safe for him if he swallows a little--check the baby section of Wal Mart (or a store along those lines). You can even just use the brush with nothing on it, but as long as he's got teeth its good to be brushing them.
Reply:To clean their teeth place them in a comfortable position that will allow you to easily access their mouth Sit on a sofa with your child's head in your lap

Lay them on the floor or on a dressing table

Be sure you can see into their mouth easily

Clean their mouth soon after birth with a wet soft cloth

As soon as a tooth appears clean it with a soft cloth, gauze pad or baby toothbrush to remove plaque.

Clean their teeth at least once a day with water and a soft toothbrush

Always clean them before they go to bed

Ask your dentist the age he recommends that you child can begin using toothpaste (ADA recommends using it after the age of two)

Once you get your baby into a routine of brushing from an early age, he or she can carry this routine into the second and third year when they will want to start brushing themselves. When your child reaches the age when they want to start brushing themselves, let them take over the routine, but continue to keep an eye on them to make sure they are brushing properly.

Reply:well you should start now, with no toothpaste just water at least twice daily.
Reply:Don't wait any longer to begin brushing! You don't have to use toothpaste until he's able to spit it out. Meanwhile, get into the habit of brushing regularly after every meal or snack.

This has 2 advantages:

1. His teeth are being cleaned.

2.He's developing an understanding of good tooth hygiene. It's much easier to get him used to this now.
Reply:you really should start to brush your babys teeth as soon as they appear to prevent cavities and tooth decay
Reply:Brush your baby's teeth from the moment the first one arrives.

You only need to do it once a day, preferebly evening.

Only use a small smear of baby toothpaste it doesnt matter if he swallows it, you could have a cup of water ready and try to get him to copy you by swilling his mouth out, it'll take a while but he'll get there.
Reply:youve answerred your own q there! its never too young to start, sounds like hes ready any way! just make it part of his routine.get him used to you helping him so you can be sure its done properly. enen where theres no teeth, they like it especialy when teething.
Reply:as soon as they appear
Reply:As soon as he has teeth.
Reply:you should start now (well actually you should have started brushing before he had teeth to get him use to it)

the fluoride free tooth paste is safe to swallow then switch to a fluoride tooth paste once all his teeth are in (2 years) and see a dentist at age one
Reply:as a mum to 4 kids, youngest a son of 2 yrs, i started to brush his before they apeared, basically to get him used to the brushing technique, and now hes 2 hes does it himself with abit of help and says mornign and nighttime do teeth, he loves it lol.

hope this helps you,you can get a toothpaste mad eby colgate called smile its low in fluride, but any wil do as long as for children.

take care
Reply:As soon as he gets teeth in is when you should start brushing them. My brother he started brushing his teeth at age 2 mainly because he saw me doing it and now he brushes his teeth 6 times a day.
Reply:you should really of started when they have their first tooth you can get a toothpaste could milk teeth and brush them twice a day and it doesn't matter if he or she swallows it cause it wont do any damage i know i am a nurse and have one of my own and one on the way. When you brush yours do his at the same time he will than started to spit it out cause mummy or daddy is doing it.
Reply:Hi, you need to start brushing their teeth the minute the first one pops up.As long as you put a tiny amount of toothpaste on the brush he will be just fine, all children swallow small amounts, as long as he doesnt eat it all its perfectly safe.
Reply:start brushing when teeth appear. buy milkteeth toothpaste and use a small blob and away you go
Reply:you should start now. when their teeth come through. tooth paste is fine. my son just sucks it off the brush. they love it.and now he goes to the stairs and asks to brush his teeth.
