Haven't been brushing my teeth in quite some time?

Before I continue, please don't answer with "eww" or "gross" or whatever, it's immature IMHO. Please respect my question and either answer or leave, instead of offending me.

--------------------------

I haven't been brushing my teeth in quite a while (not so long, but you get the idea). These days I started regretting it and started brushing my teeth again, but my gums bled a lot every time I do it. I don't want to go to the dentist though, so will staying home and brushing my teeth regularly again work? Do I really HAVE to go to the dentist?

My teeth have become yellow and they have a whitish stroke right bellow the gums. Is this dangerous?

Also, since I haven't been brushing my teeth in some time, my teeth have gone yellow and I don't know what to do. I've been thinking about crest whitening strips, but will they hurt, considering I haven't been brushing my teeth? Should I wait a while before using them?

Allow me to repeat, please don't answer with "eww" "gross" etc. Thank you.

Haven't been brushing my teeth in quite some time?
You bleed because you have gingivitis. You will want to use Listerine twice a day, morning and night.

You will also want to floss. To properly floss you make a "C" shape against the tooth and take the floss up as far as it will go, which is over the top of the tooth and under the gums. You will bleed at first, but it is ok since it is necessary. You will stop bleeding as your gums heal.

Right now, you shouldn't start with the whitestrips. Your teeth are going to be too sensitive. Heal up those gums first, and get used to brushing. When you are ready for the whitestrips, use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth the week before and during the whitening process. Be sure to use a "soft" toothbrush, and you really should be putting too much pressure when you brush. You just kind of do a light touch to your teeth.

At some point you will have to go to the dentist, at least for a cleaning. You also probably have some cavities going on. I do suggest that you start a good oral hygiene routine before going since it is easier for them to do their job if your gums are not all swollen from gingivitis.
Reply:Go to the dentist and get them cleaned. I know isn't isn't the finnest experience, but they will recomend what you should do.

If you REALLY don't want to brush your teeth, use listerine or another kind of mouthwash daily. Brush at least once a week (even though it's most healthy to brush at least 14 times a week).
Reply:Yeah, it sounds like you may have to go see a dentist for your problem buddy. i have tried to get medical advice on here before and there are so many wrong answers. If your gums are bleeding, then something could be wrong. You may need a prescription from the dentist like antibiotics to help clear the infection. Hope things work out for you.
Reply:Don't use whitenening strips while you have bleeding gums. Continue to brush and floss now otherwise you will end up with a lot of dental work in the future not to mention serious gum disease.
Reply:Sorry, but eeww really is my first thought. Your gums are bleeding because they are under stress. You need to brush heaps and use mouthwash to flush the bacteria. If you don't want to see a dentist then don't, but brush, rinse and floss a few times a day.
Reply:Go have your teeth cleaned. You can possibly have gum disease from not brushing and if you do, you can just brush them when they fall out.
Reply:Ok so assuming you are not kidding, your best bet is to go to the dentist for a good cleaning. Your gums are bleeding because of all the plaque accumulated on them. The yellowing may go away a bit with time. I wouldn't use the strips until you get a good cleaning and your gums stop bleeding. If you dont get the gum bleeding under control, your gums will continue to recede and your teeth will start to fall out. Use a good mouth rinse at least twice a day before brushing to help kill the bacteria. Good luck.
Reply:Of course you should go see a dentist. Anyone can tell you that bleeding gums are not normal.

My friends dad is a doctor, and he came in to school as a guest speaker for a biology class and near the end of class we had a discussion about his job. He said that the rule of thumb for everyone should be that if something is not normal with your body, you should go see a doctor.

Edit: By the way, I don't think dentists do it painfully these days. I go to the dentist every month because of retainers, and other small issues but the treatment methods don't hurt at all.
Reply:You gums bleed when you brush your teeth because the sugar stuff is eating away at them. So when you brush you teeth your cleaning it off causingit to bleed.

The yellow is all the sugar and stuff... this stuff is bad for your teeth and your gums. It causes Cavitys and you loose teeth... if you dont have any baby teeth left i think you shoul start to brush, if you don't and your teeth fall out you will get false teeth. The white stuff on your teeth is probably bacteria..

I prefer you go to the dentist for them to clean it all and check for any cavitys. If you don't go to the dentist the you should brush alot more
Reply:Just how long is "some time"? And how much blood is it?

I imagine dentist-types will tell you that you need to take action... but they aren't really going to consider what will happen if you DON'T take action - they'll just assume that you need to.

Why don't you try just brushing (REGULARLY) and see how things go. It should get rid of the yellowing, if you keep at it. The bleeding might go down too, once your gums adapt to the stress of being brushed.

If I were you, I'd avoid seeing the dentist until I felt some kind of pain. Dentist will no doubt cause you more pain that you'd have experienced by just brushing.

And they'll also give you an earful about how brushing your teeth is more important than looking both ways before you cross the road. But thats just because their whole job is dedicated to teeth - of course they'll say they're important.

I have a question - did your breath start smelling bad as a result of not brushing?
Reply:#1, get the softest brush possible

#2, try to brush regularly and the bleeding could go away after your gums get used to it

A dentist appointment wouldn't be a bad idea. They could at least look at your teeth, and tell you what's wrong. Personally, all I fear about at the dentist is how much money it will cost. Maybe you're spooked out because you think dentist work is painful. But I personally think that's hearsay (not true). If they do something very painful they will numb you first so you will barely feel it. And when you leave they will give you plenty of pain medication.

Hold off on the whitening strips. For one, they will only get your teeth a little bit whiter. Secondly, the health of your mouth should be the main focus, and white strips are just for cosmetic effect (your teeth won't be any healthier than before.) Dentists can do a procedure that whitens your teeth dramatically. It's still cosmetic and pricey, but you can save for it.
Reply:yes! you need to see a dentist, the reason your gums are bleeding is, if you go longer the 12 hrs.with out brushing, calculus builds under and above the gum line. the only way to remove that is see a dentist. It will not brush off! Its like having a splinter under your skin, it needs to be removed so it can heal. The white lines on your teeth are - declassification ! the enamel on your teeth is breaking down. that is the first part of tooth decay. white strips will not help, and will be painful. Your dentist can help, When you go in tell them your fears and concerns. There are several different ways to help you with your dental fears! You will not be judged in any way, Dental disease has been linked to other health problems. I have worked in the dental Field over 20 years, you will be fine.
Reply:SINCE YOUR TEETH HAVE NOT BEEN CLEANED, THEY ARE PROBOBLY VERY PAINFUL AND IRRITATED. ALOT OF BACTERIAL BUILD UP AND DECAY HAS HAD TIME TO SET IN. I WOULD SAY YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY GO TO THE DENTIST AND GET THEM CLEANED AND AN EXAM TO MAKE SURE YOU DONT HAVE ANY CAVITIES, WHICH LEFT UNTREATED COULD LEAD TO ABCESSES AND THAT WOULD BE WORSE PAIN THAN ANY THING ELSE. GOOD LUCK!
Reply:Just relax....let bygones be bygones...You are suffering from a very common dental ailment ie Gingivitis....it means swelling of the gums which bleed upon slight provocation.

Please dont worry about it too much....but please do accept the fact that you just cant treat it at home..... YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY A VISIT TO A DENTIST- because he with remove those yellow deposits from your teeth and also teach you proper technique of tooth brushing..That is very important and an absolutely painless procedure. Please dont try those whitening strips for this condition....they will not be of any help at all..Just dont ponder how much delay you have done in seeking professional help.

Just think of that saying.....Today is the first day of the rest of your life!!!...........Wishing you sparkling 32 pearls with healthy pink gums...God Bless!!

i'm a dental hygiene student.

the main purpose of brushing and flossing your teeth is to disturb the formation of dental plaque, sticky substance that build up rapidly on moist surfaces. it is mainly bacterial and water.

these bacteria, if not removed regularly, will mature and release toxins that causes irritation to your gums.

bleeding gums is a sign of gingivitis, unhealthy gums.

it is a early, reversible stage of gum disease. your gums would return back to normal once the source of inflammation is removed.

to achieve that, you need to go to a dental hygienist or dentist to get a thorough cleanning done. it is the only way because some plaque may have calcified to hard tartar or calculus that can only be removed by the dental scaling instruments, and your toothbrush may not reach areas that is between your gums and teeth.

also, since plaque build up rapidly, you need to brush your teeth regularly- twice a day and floss once daily.

you may like to find out more about Brass brushing technique.

white spots/ strokes are signs of initial demineralisation (weaking) of tooth structure.

your enamel (outhermost surface of tooth) has become more porous.

again, cause by retained plaque on tooth surface.

not to worry, this is also reversible. do you use a flouride-containing tooth paste? it is helpful in remineralisation of the tooth to make it stronger.

also, you can request doctor to apply fluoride topically onto your teeth to strengten them.

regarding yellow teeth, i would strongly discourage you to use crest whitening strips.

it is very abrasive and it only remove external stains like coffee/ tobacco. it would not work if the yellowish colouration is not extrinsic, instead you may remove your enamel and it may results in sensitivity of teeth.

you should consult your dentist please.

blushing teeth with flouride containing toothpaste and floss once a day.

Reply:This question must be a joke. Why would someone purposely let their teeth and gums get this bad?
