Brushing teeth before general anesthesia?

i am getting my wisdom teeth pulled out tomorrow at 745 am and the instructions are that i cannot have anything to eat or drink 8 hours before, however is it okay to brush my teeth and swallow maybe a tiny bit of water accidentely or will that tiny bit of water affect me?

Brushing teeth before general anesthesia?
Go ahead and brush your teeth. Just try to spit instead of drinking water in the process.
Reply:Your best bet it to brush your teeth now and then you shouldn't have to brush them again as you won't be eating or drinking anything more anyway.
Reply:Yes you can. My wife had hers pulled two weeks ago. Her instruction sheet (still have it) says she can swollow a little bit of water to take medicine. To me, that means a little water used to help clean your teeth %26amp; freshen your breath would probably be ok.
Reply:u'll be fine as long as u don't swallow a lot of water, they just don't want u to eat or drink anything incase u throw it up while taking ur teeth out. but u'll be fine!!!
Reply:Brush those snags and don\t worry about the dentist. SInce you should be on a fast, there is no worry about dirty teeth or smelly breath. Good luck.
Reply:I had the same procedure not too long ago and I had water and was fine. I guess they tell you not to eat because when you pass out ur body can't digest food as easily.
Reply:Yes you can still brush your teeth but make sure it's only a sip of water that you drink. Accidentally of course! LOL
Reply:They tell you not to eat or drink because you'll feel sick otherwise. It also might affect the anaesthesiologist's calculations but I don't think so.

A little water won't hurt at all.
Reply:JESSICA,

THIS STATS OF N.P.O OR LATIN FOR NOTHING BY MOUTH, DOES NOT APPLY TO SAME DEGREE AS , SAY ABDOMINAL SURGERY LIKE A C-SECTION.

SO GO AHEAD AND BE HAPPY TO BRUSH. YOU'LL BE FINE.
Reply:The reason for not having anything by mouth is so that you don't throw it up and inhale it. (Aspiration). Aspiration is one of the biggest anesthesia risks, and is also among the most preventable.

Your dentist will be much happier if you DO brush your teeth, but you can certainly spit instead of swallowing any water. If you do swallow a little bit, it won't hurt.

For healthy people, many anesthesiologists are ok with clear liquids up to 3 hours before surgery, but you'd need to clear that with whomever is knocking you out.

Good luck.
